The 36th ISA World Shuffleboard Championship took place in Rio de Janeiro during the week of the 23rd July. It was a singles event this time and the first occasion in which the championships have been played in South America. It proved a great success and Michael Hirsch (USA) and Ellen Hansson (Norway) were crowned champions and winners of the Golden Cue.
Amidst much anticipation the inaugural European Shuffleboard Championship took place last weekend (3rd & 4th March) in Hohenroda Germany.
A squad of 5 men and 5 women represented the UK in this singles format event. They were competing primarily against players from Norway and Germany whose extensive tournament experience was bound to be a major factor. Despite this, good results were achieved by Trevor and Cathy Seaman who both finished 11th in their category and Martin who came 12th.
The men’s champion was Torben Hussmannand the women’s event was won by the diminutive 12 year-old Fabienne Fluck. It was great to see them prove that shuffleboard is far from being justa senior’s sport.
The presentation of the entire tournament was absolutely superb and much credit should go to the German Shuffleboard association for this. The Hohenroda resort hotel is perfect both as a competitive venue and as a location for the plWangerayers to enjoy one another’s company in the evenings. It was unanimously agreed to return there in two years time to do it all again.
The first European Shuffleboard Championships will take place in
Hohenroda, nr Frankfurt Germany on 3rd and 4th March this year.
The UK will send a squad of 5 men and 4 ladies to compete
primarily against the hosts and a powerful team from Norway.
There will also be other entrants from Austria and Poland. This
singles tournament will take place on polytile courts in the beautiful
Hohenroda resort and will ultimately produce a European
Champion for both men and women.
The British ladies team were the unexpected stars of the recent 2017 ISA World Team Championships in St Cloud, Orlando, Florida. This was the first time the UK had entered teams in both the mens and ladies sections so it was bound to be a steep learning curve. It proved very tough for the men but the women finished an amazing joint second after two round robin sections, beating the eventual American champions along the way. They were finally placed third after a sudden death play-off.
The team was, from left to right, Tania Green, Lesley Davis Pam Hill (captain) Kerry Bailey and Cathy Seaman .
The shuffleboard world comes together again on 24th October for the 35th World Championships in St Cloud Florida. The UK is entering both a men’s and women’s team for the first time. Taking part are :
Pete Davis Lesley Davis
Phil Hill Pam Hill
Trevor Seaman Cathy Seaman
Phil O’Brien Kerry Bailey
Trevor Colby Tania Green
The event takes place over 5 days in the Orlando sunshine and will be very challenging for us Brits against some of the best players in the world but we will be no push-overs. We’ll let you know how it goes.
The London Shuffle Club will open its doors for a limited period from Wednesday 12th Oct. The Old Truman Brewery in trendy Brick Lane will house the club where you can rent a court by the hour while sipping cocktails or downing craft beers. It looks set to be a real eye-opener on the London nightlife scene. http://www.londonshuffle.com/
The first international match between the UKSA and the German
Shuffleboard Association took place on 6th and 7th May on 4 polytile
courts in Central Hall Wymondham. It proved to be a totally
absorbing contest played in a really friendly spirit but the vastly
more experienced overseas rivals were always going to be difficult
opponents for the local squad. Each team fielded 12 players , a
mixture of male and female, young and old. Many of the matches
went down to the final discs with the Germans skilled at edging out
the Brits at the death. The experience gained by the UKSA will
stand them in great stead in the future and help and advice offered
by their opponents was gratefully received. A special occasion and
many new friendships forged.
The next Shuffleboard World Championships will be held in St Cloud, just south of Orlando Florida during the week commencing 23rd October 2016. The format varies on alternate years, this year being a national team championship. The UK are,of course I, invited but if we are not able to field a full squad we will be able to join a “United Nations” team with players from other countries.
A date has also been set for the inaugural European Championships to be held in Germany on the weekend of 4th/5th March 2017 Teams from Germany, Norway and the UK will be represented and it is hoped other nationalities may yet become involved.
