2nd Norwich Shuffleboard Open

We were pleased to be joined once again by visitors from America, Canada and Norway for a another very successful tournament in St Andrews Hall Norwich. In the first phase players from over the pond proved much too strong for the local contingent , but they were gracious in victory and extremely encouraging and helpful.  The final two days featured a 3-way match in which the Norwegian men and the North American Ladies came out on top.

The week  also offered the opportunity for some very sociable events in the evening and the promise of future meetings to look forward to.

First Austrian Shuffleboard Championships

Earlier this month, the first Austrian Shuffleboard Championships took place in Vienna. A field of 24 players enjoyed the competition with Stefan Kures being crowned champion.

The competition was declared a great success and as a result of it, the possibility of establishing regional clubs in Austria has already been discussed.
This competition is hopefully the first of many in Austria as interest grows. In addition, the popularity and profile of the game there can only be enhanced by the staging of the world.

2nd Norwich Shuffleboard Open – April 2018

From the 24th to the 27th April, the UK Shuffleboard Association will be hosting the second Norwich Shuffleboard Open. Once again, the historic surroundings of St Andrews Hall will provide a spectacular venue for the duration of the event. Our friends from Norway and North America will be joining us and competing in a team format over the four days.

There will be separate men’s and women’s matches, firstly between North America and the Brits followed by three-way matches when the Norwegians join us on the 26th.

It promises to be a really exciting event and visitors and spectators are more than welcome to come along and watch the action.

Wymondham Shufflers and Ashwellthorpe

Wymondham Shufflers took up the challenge from neighbours Ashwellthorpe for  another enjoyable contest on their roll-out courts. The singles went 6-1 in Ashwellthorpe’s favour so the contest was pretty much over from that point. As the Wymondham players became more accustomed to the courts their performance improved but the home side still ran out 11-5 winners.

World Shuffleboard Championships

The 36th ISA World Shuffleboard Championship took place in Rio de Janeiro during the week of the 23rd July. It was a singles event this time and the first occasion in which the championships have been played in South America. It proved a great success and Michael Hirsch (USA) and Ellen Hansson (Norway) were crowned champions and winners of the Golden Cue.

Inaugural European Shuffleboard Championship

Amidst much anticipation the inaugural European Shuffleboard Championship took place last weekend (3rd & 4th March) in Hohenroda Germany.

A squad of 5 men and 5 women represented the UK in this singles format event.  They were competing primarily against players from Norway and Germany whose extensive tournament experience was bound to be a major factor. Despite this, good results were achieved by Trevor and Cathy Seaman who both finished 11th in their category and Martin  who came 12th.

The men’s champion was Torben Hussmannand the women’s event was won by the diminutive 12 year-old Fabienne Fluck. It was great to see them prove that shuffleboard is far from being justa senior’s sport.

The presentation of the entire tournament was absolutely superb and much credit should  go to the German Shuffleboard association for this. The Hohenroda resort hotel is perfect both as a competitive venue and as a location for the plWangerayers to enjoy one another’s company in the evenings. It was unanimously agreed to return there in two years time to do it all again.

British Ladies Unexpected Stars of World Championships

The British ladies team were the unexpected stars of the recent 2017 ISA World Team Championships in St Cloud, Orlando, Florida.  This was the first time the UK had entered teams in both the mens and ladies sections so it was bound to be a steep learning curve. It proved very tough for the men but the women finished an amazing joint second after two round robin sections, beating the eventual American champions along the way. They were finally placed third after a sudden death play-off.

Women ISA Contenders

The team was, from left to right, Tania Green, Lesley Davis Pam Hill (captain) Kerry Bailey and Cathy Seaman .
